How Good an Expert are you?
WE ALL KNOW AN EXPERT OR TWO, MAYBE YOU’RE AN EXPERT YOURSELF, BUT HOW GOOD AN EXPERT ARE YOU, REALLY?
And we don’t mean how much do you know, it’s more, how much can you use that knowledge to affect change. As the concept of Expertship developed over the years, three distinct levels emerged. Our goal is to move as many experts as possible, up the scale below.
In addition to having an exceptional level of deep domain knowledge, as a master expert you’re able to step back from the detail and grasp the big picture. Taking the context of the entire organisation into account, and its position within the market, you can then tailor your efforts to dovetail perfectly with overall business strategy. You’ll often develop innovative new approaches, or products, and then drive the change required to adopt them, throughout the business.
As a recognised expert, you’re highly valued in the organisation as someone who can get things done. You can solve almost any problem you find, and you’re always looking to improve your skills. Your focus tends to be departmental and tactical, however you occasionally have strategic vision, that may be difficult to communicate.
You’re extremely task orientated, and happy to give 100% to any problem you’re pointed at. You’re not quite ready to scan the horizon and contribute strategically – but you’re certainly smart enough to get there.
