When you only interact with a very narrow group of people within your organisation you develop tunnel vision. You need to be proactive about networking outside of your team.

Ask yourself these critical questions:

  • Am I taking the time to talk about the organisation and its market context with my stakeholders?

  • Do I regularly take the initiative to call them or visit them, if only briefly? Do I ask them to clarify the context of things I have been asked to do? Do I inquire about what they see happening in the organisation?

  • Am I actively reducing the amount of rework I have to do by getting ahead of organisational requirements?
